    Ecology of Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) with special reference to human-sun bear conflict in and around Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh

    The status and distribution of sun bear was studied in Chandel and Ukhrul districts of Manipur, and also information on human-sun bear conflict and conservation threats was collected. Recently a study conducted in different protected areas in Arunachal Pradesh has also confirmed the presence of sun bear. This in-depth systematic scientific research on ecology of sun bear has been undertaken for the first time in and around Namdapha Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh. This will help develop an action plan for conservation and management of sun bear and also to mitigate the human-sun bear conflict effectively on long term basis. This is the first study in India to study the status and distribution of sun bear based on direct and indirect evidences in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh. From 2008 to 2010, field surveys were carried out to know the occurrence and distribution of sun bears. In addition to direct sightings and indirect evidences, information on occurrence of crop raids in different jhuming areas was also collected and also provides suggestions for mitigation of human-sun bear conflict, and recommendations for long term conservation of sun bear population.

    Ecology of wild pig and human wild-pig conflict in and around Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan

    The wild pig is one of the most widely distributed terrestrial mammals. It has always been associated itself with man, and successfully utilises the human altered landscape. The study on ecological and management considerations in Ranthambore National Park provide a basis for developing an action plan to mitigate the problem effectively and on a long-term basis. In the present study Methods for capturing and handling wild pigs were developed and evaluated. The study on capture and radio-collaring of wild pigs was conducted from April 2008 through June 2010 in Ranthambore National Park. The propensity of wild pigs to overcome deterrents is a behavioural adaptation, about which very little is known. So it is important to understand the behaviour of wild pigs to use agro-ecosystem, nature and extent of human-wild pig conflict and assess qualitatively and quantitatively the damage to agricultural crops in and around Ranthambore National Park. A reconnaissance survey was conducted in and around the National Park and information on the nature and extent of human-wild pig damage problems was collected from the villages and the use and efficacy of power fence was evaluated in controlling crop damage caused by wild pigs

    Habitat use, ranging pattern and management of sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) in North Bilaspur Forest Division, Madhya Pradesh.

    In the North Bilaspur forest division (NBFD) Chhattisgarh, sloth bears have created very formidable image among the local people. The habitat available to sloth bears is highly disturbed, fragmented, unprotected, and interspersed with villages, small townships, and cultivation areas. Sloth bears invade human habitation and agricultural crop fields and increasingly attack on people and cause extensive crop damage. This is the first study on sloth bears in India, which has been conducted outside the protected areas. The study is very important not only for the benefit of local people, suffering from the bear menace but also for the bear itself whose status is vulnerable in these areas. The study was carried out in Pendra and Marwahi ranges using transect sampling of vegetation and bear evidences, remote sensing, bear count at den sites, tracking of collared bears, and village survey.

    Study of leopard menace, food habits and habitat parameters in Mandi Distrcit, Himachal Pradesh.

    This study deals status, distribution and relative abundance of leopard in relation to habitat characteristics of leopard. Estimation of status of leopard population and its distribution become more important in an area when a species is highly threatened due to continuous habitat degradation and loss of habitat due to the increasing human population. Many carnivore species are rare or elusive, and documenting their distribution is difficult. Habitat requirement is also one of the most important factors which influence the distribution and abundance of a species, therefore habitat evaluation is a vital step in the formulation of carnivore management in an area. Large carnivores need large areas of relatively wild habitat. The assessment of nature and extent of man leopard conflict in relation to land use pattern. Carnivores exert a profound influence on biological communities via predation and interspecific competition. Human-carnivore conflict is considered to be a major conservation and rural livelihood issue because many carnivore species have been heavily persecuted due to elevated conflict levels with communities. Present study documented about the enormity of the problem, problem areas and human casualties and livestock depredation with respect to places of occurrence, season, time and circumstances of attack. It would help plan mitigation of leopard problem, besides conservation and future scientific management of the species in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh
