    Bustard Recovery Program: Annual Progress Report 2023-24

    Within the project scope, significant efforts have been made in Rajasthan since 2019 to breed and conserve both species. This has resulted in the establishment of ex-situ populations, including 29 captive GIB and 10 captive LF. Additionally, measures to protect these species in their natural habitats have been undertaken, such as managing nest predators, addressing threats, and sensitising key stakeholders and decision-makers in conservation efforts.

    The Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) and Lesser Florican (Sypheotides indicus) remain among the most Critically Endangered bird species globally, with estimated populations of approximately 140 and 800 individuals, respectively. Recovery efforts for these flagship species are vital not only for their survival but also for preserving the broader biodiversity of arid and semi-arid open natural ecosystems (ONEs) in India.
