    Responses Shown by Bird Communities to Teak Palatations in Sagar Forest Division, Karnataka

    This study was aimed at discerning the responses shown by bird communities to teak plantations of various age classes in Sagar Forest Division, Karnataka within Latitude 13° 36' and 14° 38' North 74° Longitude 38' and 75° 32'East Latitude. Birds were sampled using line transects in three habitat strata, natural plantations, mature teak plantations and young teak plantations. Density, diversity and community similarity were the chief ecological responses that were quantified to bring out differences in the usage of forest plantations by native bird fauna. Habitat (vegetation) correlates, both structural and floristic were quantified to establish the reasons for differences. The sampling period was from December 2008 to April 2009. This period was divided into two seasons, winter and summer. A total of 9 transects were laid, marked and sampled at least 4 times per season. Birds were divided into three feeding guilds and three habitat guilds for analysis. The overall density of birds across the three strata was found to be higher in summer than in winter. However a guild level analysis showed that in winter while insectivorous birds were most abundant in natural forest with decreasing density towards young plantations (F (6.241) , p< 0.05). There was no difference in their density in summer. Phytophagous birds showed the exact reverse trend. Density of this guild was higher in young plantations than natural forests and mature plantations in winter and summer (F(S.689), p< 0.05), (F (14.302), p< 0.01) respectively. Overall diversity of birds showed a trend of decreasing species richness from natural forests to young plantations in both seasons. However this difference was almost non existent in summer at the guild level. The abundance of birds belonging to evergreen and moist deciduous forests shows a consistent· rise in abundance from winter to summer in all the three strata. There is also evidence that there is ingression of individuals of species that were common to both seasons possibly for nesting. The overall community similarity is quite high between the three strata and it increases from winter to summer.     Interaction of Kiang (Equus kiang) with Livestok in Hanley Valley of Chanthang Wildlife Sanctuary, Ladakh

    Hanley Valley «320 41' 27" N 790 04' 3.5") in Eastern Ladakh forms the western most extension of Tibetan plateau and has been recognized as an important biogeographic province in India (Indian Trans-Himalaya). This region harbors a rich array of wild and domestic ungulates. The area is also home to nomadic Changpa and Tibetan refugee herders. The political, social and ecological transformations have altered previous, well-established links between the pastoral population and their rangeland environment. Over the years, with growing integration of the local economy of Ladakh and with better development of cash markets, the pastoral community is fast losing its tolerance towards the kiang and it is increasingly seen as a competitor to livestock. The purpose of this study was to document this intensifying conflict between pastoralism and Kiang conservation, using resource selection functions. Data on habitat variables were collected on 4 fixed trails of varying length (3- 7 km) for kiang (with and without livestock presence) and livestock for use availability analysis. For food habits, micro-histological method in case of kiang and bite count method in case of livestock was used. Data on activity pattern of kiang was collected to examine change in response to livestock presence. Density and encounter rates were estimated using vehicle transects (n=5) of varying lengths (5-56 km). Livestock were followed (focal animal sampling) from dawn to dusk to estimate amount of forage removed. Availability of different habitat variables was estimated using ArcGIS 9.2. Total of 104 kiang groups before arrival of livestock and 187 kiang groups after livestock arrival to the area were recorded. Habitat use by kiang and livestock was significantly different (8 = 0.00016, P < 0.05). Habitat use by kiang before and after livestock arrival was found to be significantly different (8 = 0.013, P <0.05). Groups of kiang were observed (n=14) for time budget evaluation, 7 prior (640 min) and 7 (820 min) after livestock had come to the area. Activity pattern of kiang before and after livestock arrival was found to be significantly different (8 = 0.04, P <0.05). Food preference for kiang before and after livestock arrival was not found to be significantly different. Food preference for kiang and livestock was significantly different (6= 0.0000007, P < 0.05). Use-availability analysis suggested differential selection for food plants. Schoener's niche overlap for food items found moderate overlap between kiang, sheep and goat «60%) and high overlap between kiang and horse (>80%). Forage removed (kg) by sheep, goat and horse were 2.33 kg, 2.25 and 8.19 kg respectively. Total density and encounter rate for Hanley valley was 0.07 kiang/km2 and 0.45 kiang per km respectively. The difference in habitat use translated into Kiang using higher elevations while livestock used middle elevations more than available. Kiang used steep slopes whereas livestock used steep as well as gentle slopes more than available. Kiang used North-West aspect more than available. Kiang used vegetation communities dominated by graminoides while sheep-goat used communities dominated by shrub and forbs. Density and encounter estimates did not show considerable increase in kiang population compared to previous studies. Hence, the perception of people of kiang overstocking in the study area appears to be misplaced. Detailed perception studies should be carried out in the whole of Changthang and herder-centered participatory programmes need to be carried out on a large scale to ensure long term conservation of kiang in eastern Ladakh.

    Evaluating the importance of scale in estimating tiger populations

    Population estimation is one of the most important aspects of ecological studies as it plays a pivotal role in establishing priorities for species specific conservation and for delineating management practices. The tiger serves as a flagship and umbrella species for conservation efforts in the Indian subcontinent but, unfortunately wild tiger populations are on a drastic decline owing to factors like poaching, habitat fragmentation and degradation. In such a scenario reliable population estimates prove to be of vital importance. Camera trapping technique has been widely used for population estimation of cryptic carnivores including tigers. An attempt was made, through this study, to arrive at population and density estimates for Corbett NP through camera trapping technique following the mark recapture framework and answering some key questions regarding the importance of sampling effort required for arriving at such reliable estimates. A total of 7865 trap nights yielded 358 captures of 103 individual tigers within an intensively sampled area of (MCP) 420.86 km2. The estimated density of tiger was 16.01 (±1.6) per 100 km2 for RPSV, a new approach to calculate effectively sampled area. These estimates coincided with the estimates using full MMDM method. Also, the conventional method of using half MMDM seems to overestimate the density. The estimated sampling effort required for arriving at accurate and precise estimates of the true population in terms of sampling occasions amounted to 35 - 40 days. Evaluation of the influence of trap density revealed that high trap density (25 traps/km2 ca.) is required to get reliable estimates of population irrespective of the underlying population/density gradient.

    Patterns in plant species richness and diversity in the forest fragments of Western Ghats, Karnataka.

    Patterns of species richness diversity and distribution, and the factors affecting these patterns have always attracted the attention of many ecologists. Degree of fragmentation is one such factor affecting the species richness and composition also of great importance to conservation biology in light of rapid loss of biodiversity. The study examined the patterns of distribution and species richness and its correlates in a fragmented landscape in Kodagu district, Western Ghats, Karnataka. The study also examined some of the factors affecting distribution of epiphytes such as distribution along the tree height gradient and host specificity. A total of 129 species of trees, 29 species of Iians as and 68 species of vascular epiphytes were recorded in 56, 25m x 25m square plots. 60 species of shrubs were recorded in 90, 5m x 5m square plots. Patch area was found to be significantly correlated with tree species richness, but area was not correlated with shrub, liana and epiphyte species richness. However plant density used as measure of site specific productivity along with area were significantly correlated with lianas and epiphyte richness. Neither of these could explain the variation in shrub species richness. Lianas and shrubs did not show any such trend but epiphyte richness showed a negative trend in rarefied species richness with increase in area. Rank abundance curves indicated that Reserve forest had the most equitable distribution of abundance classes and also more number of rare species. Species composition was found to differ significantly across different size classes. All the plant communities showed moderate levels of nestedness. Distribution of an epiphyte along the tree was not influenced by the mode of dispersal alone. There was no strong evidence in support of host specificity however some selective host species were found to be favoured by epiphytes.

    Interactions Between Livestock and Ladakh Urial (Ovis vignei vigei)

    The Ladakh urial is a highly endangered and endemic subspecies of wild sheep. Past hunting pressures had decimated the population to extremely low levels. Recent estimates (1,000-1,500 individuals) suggest a marginal increase in numbers. The Ladakh urial occupies plateaus and gentle slopes along the lowermost elevations in the Indus and Shyok Valleys, areas that are easily accessible and heavily used by humans. This is also the most heavily populated area and due to geopolitical reasons, receives the highest developmental benefits. Due to such changes the Ladakh urial may be highly vulnerable to population decimation. Pastoralism is a way of life in bulk of the Ladakh Trans-Himalaya; a region Where wildlife including endangered species such as the urial and snow leopard are not restricted inside wildlife Protected Areas alone. Such species thus share their habitat with the over 3,00,000 livestock that occurs in the region. Recent studies from the Trans Himalaya have indicated competition with livestock as an important reason for the decimation of wild herbivore populations. This study thus aimed to investigate the interactions between the endangered Ladakh urial and livestock during the winter of 2002-03, a season of resource scarcity. We investigated the habitat selection of the Ladakh urial and its separation with livestock at the level of space, habitat variables and diet, to gather evidence for competition. Four trails were walked 10 times each to obtain information on the habitat usage by the urial and livestock. Further information on livestock use was gathered from the herders using semi-structured interviews and resource maps. Diet of both urial and livestock was investigated by examining recently foraged sites using 10, 1 mX1 m quadrats at each such site. All sightings from the trails were plotted on a 1 :50,000 501 Toposheet. A 500mX500m grid was overlaid on these locations to obtain the grids used exclusively by the urial and livestock and by both together to calculate spatial separation. Both, Ladakh urial and livestock primarily used the mid elevation zones (4,121- 4,400m) with gentle to moderate inclination (<30°). However, along the elevation gradient there was some separation in that the urial used the uppermost elevations to a substantial degree (44%) even during the cold winter season, which livestock avoided.The findings of this study thus show that the habitat and diet requirements of Ladakh urial and livestock sharing the range were similar during the winter season. The relatively high use of the sparsely vegetated uppermost elevations of the range by urial, where the cost of foraging is likely to be higher than the mid-elevations suggests that the urial were excluded from these areas by the livestock. We also reason that the relatively poor young:100 adult female ratio (31:100) may be a manifestation of the stress provided by such competition with livestock and survival in sub-optimal habitats.

    Floristic Composition and Patterns of Regeneration of Rainforest Trees in the Fragmented Forests of the Anamalai Hills, Southern Western Ghats

    The word diverse is almost a synonym for tropical rainforests. In no other habitat are found such an enormous number of life forms. These highly diverse systems are now facing severe threats as a result of habitat fragmentation. The aim of this study was to study the floristic composition and patterns of regeneration in the fragmented forests of the Anamalai hills, southern Western Ghats.Six fragments were chosen which varied in size and disturbance levels. They were- Iyerpadi (>2600ha), Andiparai (>185ha), Puduthotam (92ha), Pannimedu (66ha), Varattuparai 1c (11ha) and Varattuparai 4 (4ha). Quadrats of · 3 sizes were used to sample for different variables. 20 x 20m quadrats were used to enumerate tree sp, 5 x 5m quadrats were used to enumerate sapling sp and 1 x 1 m quadrats were used to count the numbers of seedlings. Height (m), GBH (cm), lopping I cutting signs, altitude, canopy cover, presence of weedy shrubs and ground cover of weedy herbs were the other variables measured. A total of 112 quadrats were laid, 25 in the first 4 fragments, 9 and 3 in the last two respectively. The findings revealed that tree and sapling generic richness showed a negative relationship with disturbance and time since isolation. Their correlations with area though positive were weak. Fragments were subjected to varied nature and levels of disturbance. Fragment characteristics such as area, time since isolation did influence the patterns of tree and sapling composition though weakly. There is an extremely weak correspondence between the tree and sapling composition of each fragment. There was a high number ' of non rainforest species in fragments which were relatively more disturbed. Relatively undisturbed fragments were more rich in rainforest trees · and saplings. Fragments showing higher levels of canopy openness were relatively more disturbed than others. Disturbed fragments also showed higher levels of weed invasion. Iyerpadi showed the highest generic richness in trees and saplings. Varattuparai 4 showed the least richness in both trees and sapling. Human disturbance due to its chronic. nature was the principal predictor of both tree and sapling composition.

    Habitat Occupancy by tiger Prey Species Across Anthropogenic Disturbance Regimes in Panna National Park, M.P.

    Effect of anthropogenic disturbance on habitat occupancy by tiger prey species was studied in Panna National Park, Madhya Pradesh. The study was conducted between November 1998 and April 1999. Line transect method and Pellet count technique were used to estimate abundance for all ungulates. Abundance estimates were used as a measure for intensity of habitat use by all species. The density estimates from line transects are associated with high coefficient of variation, which is largely a function of the small sample size resulting form extremely low densities. Ordination of habitat parameters grouped the transects based on habitat quality and structure, disturbance and topography. Anthropogenic disturbance was found to be an important factor, influencing habitat quality and differential use of habitats by animals. Sambar associated strongly with low disturbance hill habitats and poorly with relocated village sites and disturbed plateau transects. Indications from line transects and pellet count method concur in the case of sambar. Chital were very localised in their distribution being strongly restricted to secondary successional stages and ecotones between relocated village sites and woodland. Nilgai was a generalist in terms of habitat occupancy. In case of nilgai the two methods complement each other with the information they provide. The information from pellet-group counts was found to reflecting patterns that are not detected by direct sampling methods like line transects. Chinkara was strongly associated with the disturbed areas, largely because of its openness, but also found in the undisturbed areas. Wild pig, like nilgai, was a generalist, but showed preference for fringe areas of forest adjoining agricultural fields. Langur showed a marked preference for hill habitats and did not differentiate between disturbed and undisturbed hill habitats. Langur also showed the strongest association with water. The distribution of preferred prey, sambar and chital is localized. Nilgai, which is distributed throughout the study area, is found in habitats not favorable for tigers. Such a distribution would probably only support dispersing and transient animals. Therefore habitat management should be aimed at maintaining and expanding habitats suitable for cervids. Disturbance in the form of livestock grazing and woodcutting are largely responsible for maintaining poor habitat quality. The cause for these disturbances cannot be disconnected from the socio-economic and cultural reality of the people, both near and far, and therefore the conservation of the tiger has to address these aspects rather than restricting only to the biology of the animal.
