    Ranging and Habitat Utilization by the Himalayan Ibex (Capra ibex sibirica) in Pin Valley National Park.

    The Himalayan ibex is an important prey species of the endangered apex predator of the alpine region, the snow leopard (Schaller 1977). There is an imminent threat to the trans-Himalayan areas in India due to increasing human activities. In this context the study is conducted to study ibex in a relatively safe population to learn about its habitat requirements and ranging behaviour. The study area is part of the Pin Valley National Park (PVNP; 31o 6' 40'' to 32o 2' 20'' N latitude and 77o 41' 21" to 78o 6' 19" E longitude), located in the South-East of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh

    The ecology and conservation of ungulates in Great Himalayan National Park, Western Himalaya.

    Ungulates form a major component of the mammalian fauna in the Himalaya. In total, 19 ungulate species belonging to four families viz., Moschidae, Cervidae, Bovidae and Equidae, inhabit the Himalaya, out of which eight species are reported from the state of Himachal Pradesh (HP). Apart from some surveys and short term ecological studies on a few ungulate species of Western Himalaya, there has been no detailed study on ungulates of HP except for Himalayan ibex (Capra ibex sibirica). The available literature highlights the difficulties of studying rare and/ or elusive ungulates in Himalayan condition. Long term study on the ecology of theses' species are needed for the conservation and monitoring. Present study on the ecology and conservation of ungulates namely goral (Nemorhaedus qoral), Himalayan musk deer (Moschus chrvsogaster), Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus), in Great Himalayan National Park, Kullu district, HP, was conducted from January 1996 to November 1998. An intensive study area of ca. 90 km2 was selected in the South-western region of. the Park, which represents various ecological zones of the Park. The objectives of the study were (i) to estimate the abundance and density of goral, Himalayan musk deer & Himalayan tahr in relation to human use, (ii) to determine the group size. composition & sex ratio of these animals. (iii) to study the habitat use pattern and (iv) to identify and discuss conservation issues. mitigation measures and to develop a long term' monitoring programme.     Habitat use by Chital (Cervus axis) in Dhaulkhand, Rajaji National Park, India

    A study on the habitat use by chital or spotted deer (Cervus axis) was conducted in Dhaulkhand Rajaji National Park, from November 1992 to May 1993. The objectives of the study were to understand the spatio-temporal use of habitats by chital and to identify the factors that govern the patterns of habitat use. Foot transects were used to estimate the densities of chital and quantify the availability and utilization of resources.

    Habitat Use by Goral (Nemorhaedus goral bedfordi) in Majhatal Harsang Wildlife Sanctuary Himachal Pradesh, India

    Studied the habitat use pattern of goral (Nemorhaedus goral bedfordi} in Majhatal Harsang Wildlife Sanctuary in the Himalaya to determine its habitat requirements. Of special interest were the roles of forage availability and quality and the antipredator strategy of goral in determining its habitat selection. These factors are of paramount importance in influencing the habitat selection by mountain ungulates. Diet composition of goral in terms of the proportions of graminoids versus browse was determined through pellet analysis. Its escape strategy was determined by direct observation. These results were then related to the actual habitat use patterns, which were determined by obtaining and quantifying locations of goral (n=334) over two seasons, along five monitoring trails. Use of each habitat category was interpreted with respect to its availability. A non-mapping technique was used for determining the availability of each habitat component. I identified nine vegetation types based on physiognomy and floristics. These were: Open Pine Community (OPC), Dense Pine Forest (DPF), Open Oak-Pine Community (OOPC), Dense Oak-Pine Forest (DOPF), Nullah Oak Forest with Low undergrowth (NOFL), Nullah Oak Forest with High undergrowth (NOFH), Euphorbia-Woodfordia-Dodoenia Scrub (EWDS), Open Euphorbia Scrub (OES) and Low Altitude Nullah Forest (LANF). Both forage quality and the antipredator strategy had a profound influence on habitat selection by goral. Goral was a grazer. It was partial to the younger, more nutritive grass phenophases - a prediction that can be made on the basis of its small body size. It preferred open areas with extensive grass cover. Forest cover, along with cliffs, was an important escape area for goral. But it avoided areas with extensive shrub cover. Such areas have little grass. Besides, the shrub cover obstructs visibility and quick movement, and makes the animal vulnerable to predation.

    Habitat Utilization by Hog Deer (Axis Porcinus) in Relation to other Sympatric Species at Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

    This study on habitat utilization by hog deer (Axis porcinus) in relation to other sympatric species (chital & rhino) was carried out from December 1998 to April 1999 in Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, West Bengal, The spatial and seasonal differences in habitat utilization of grasslands by hog deer, chital and rhino were investigated, The study was restricted to various types of grassland s existing within the sanctuary which were broadly stratified into five major types: Pure grassland (natural ), pure grassland (plantation), Savanna grassland (natural) and Savanna grassland ( plantation) and riverine grassland, Different habitat were traversed on riding elephants on selected paths to collect data on animal abundance/hr based on sightings in different habitat types, A total of nine transects were laid in different habitats to quantify availability of habitat parameters and their selection. Dung abundance was quantified using belt transects, at each 100m interval on the transects, The availability and utilization of habitats based on direct and Indirect methods were examined using Neu et al (1974), The results showed that hog deer selected areas with extensive grass cover with structural mosaics of cover and mostly early phenophase as opposed to habitats with low cover values, High abundance of hog deer were found in areas with higher proportion of Imperata cylindrica, Fire or burning of grasslands in combination with rain seemed to influence the overall selection of habitat by hog deer, Cutting of thatch by local people also influenced the habitat use by hog deer, Area preferred by hog deer were found to have high cattle dung density thus showing a very high pressure on areas preferred by hog deer, Interaction with chital seemed to be very low as the areas preferred by hogdeer are avoided by chital, Rhino also showed a similar trend with preference for plantation grassland areas and avoidance for natural grassland, Apart from the effect of these sympatric species directly, habitat use by hog deer seemed to have been influenced by the management steps taken to provide protection to Rhino, Plantation areas raised for the management of rhino were avoided by hog deer.

    Food habits and foraging behaviour of Indian Gazelle (Gazella benneti) in Rajasthan desert

    The Indian gazelle inhabiting the arid regions is studied with respect to their food habits and foraging behaviour. In arid areas the selection of a habitat by an animal is mostly governed by spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of food items and the food requirements of that species. This becomes critical especially in an semi-agricultural landscape where the ecosystem is altered without any consideration for the animal. The study was conducted in a habitat close to human habitation around Jodhpur after the harvest. This area is dominated by desert vegetation such as Crotalaria burhia. The study is conducted for a period of six months encompassing two seasons winter (December 15, 1996 - February 20, 1997) and summer (March 20, 1997 - May 10, 1997). The intensive study area was differentiated into six habitat types based on the structural and floristic composition of the vegetation-viz, crop fields, fallow lands, scrub area dominated by Zizyphus, and hedges of Maytenus-Capparis Zizyphus among the agricultural fields. Differential habitat selection by gazelle was observed during summer and winter mainly due to selection of diet based on seasonal nutritional requirements. Diet selection is looked in terms of use-availability and plant chemistry. Based on a relative preference ratio, the habitat and food types were ranked, and the observed trends are explained in terms of the existing theories on diet selection. Diet composition varies with the age and sex classes of the animal viz. breeding males, sub-adult males and adult females. In winter and summer differences in habitat use was exhibited by gazelle, also there was a difference in proportion of the food species in the diet between two seasons. The scrub area was dominated by vegetation having higher crude protein and tannin, was used more than, available in order to supplement their diet (especially in the case of , females) and in summer the crop fields dominated by Crotelaria burhia were used more by all categories of animals. Females fed on a high protein and less tannin diets which is pronounced in winter, sub-adults also fed on a diet having higher protein and tannin, while males were not biased towards a high quality food both in winter and summer. These differences were influenced by the spatial distribution, of food species, plant chemistry, and the differential use of food species among different age and sex classes during the two seasons. Protein and tannins along with moisture seem to govern diet selection rather than just being a function of availability during winter and summer. Spatial distribution of food plants along the habitat types (in the current land-use pattern) does influence habitat use by gazelle. Selection and proportion of the time spent on food species during summer and winter suggest that Indian gazelle is a browser.

    Habitat Occupancy by Wild Ungulates in Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh

    This study on the habitat occupancy by wild ungulates was carried out from November1996 to April 1997 in the Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh. the spatial and seasonal difference in habitat occupancy of the major forest types by the wild ungulates viz. chital (Axis axis), sambar (Cervus unicolor), gaur (Bas gaurus), nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) were assessed. The study area was stratified into three major forest types based on floristics and physiognomy as: Teak dominant forest, Anogeissus boswellia mixed forest and Miscellaneous forest. A total of 12 transects were laid in three forest types. Data was collected on ungulate densities, dung abundance and habitat parameters. The Line transect Method was used for estimating ungulate densities. Dung abundance was quantified using a belt transect, at each 200 m point on the transects. Habitat parameters were also quantified at these points. The relationship between habitat factors and the distribution of ungulates were examined using bivariate and multivariate analyses. The results showed that chital densities were significantly lower in Teak dominant forest type in winter, and in the Anogeissus boswellia mixed forest type in summer. Both Teak and Misellaneous forest types showed greater chital densities in summer than in winter. Sambar densities showed no significant differences between forest types both in winter and in summer. Anogeissus boswellia mixed forest type showed a significant increase in sambar density from winter to summer. Chital dung abundance showed no significant differences between forest types, both in winter and in summer, while sambar dung abundance in the Anogeissus boswellia mixed forest type was significantly higher that, other forest types in both seasons. There were significant seasonal differences in chital dung abundance in all forest types, whereas sambar dung abundance increased only in the miscellaneous forest type.

    Sexual Segregation in the Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius)

    Studied sexual segregation in the Nilgiri tahr Hemitragus hylocrius from November 1994 through April 1995 at Eravikulam National Park, Kerala, India. This Study covered the post-rut phase of the tahr's annual cycle. The objectives of the study were to examine whether sexual segregation exists in the tahr identify modes of segregation, and compare empirical findings with some theoretical hypotheses advanced to explain sexual segregation. I investigated differences in ,the way the sexes occurred in social units, used space, chose forage and budgeted time. Data on group composition and habitat selection were collected and two trails monitored regularly. Availability of forage was quantified in three habitat strata. Differences in dietary quality were estimated with two faecal indices - crude protein and ash. Data on activity budgets were collected from group scans. Throughout the study period, tahr occurred mostly in female groups, bachelor groups, and 1 to a lesser degree, in mixed groups. They showed marked segregation in the use of habitat types. Male groups used the rolling grasslands at the higher elevations intensively, whereas the female groups were distributed in rocky areas dominated by Plebophylllum kunthianum, and in areas of grass interspersed with cliffs. Male and female groups showed distinct differences in their choice of habitat. Males chose areas of high absolute amounts of graminoid forage, whereas females preferred areas of greater security; these were typically areas high slope angles and percent rockiness. - There were no differences in the levels of crude protein and ash in the pellets of male and female tahr. Differences were also found in the time-activity budgets of the sexes. Although all age sex classes spent equal proportions of time feeding, large males spent a greater proportion of their time resting than either small males or females. Females on the other hand, spent a greater proportion of their time moving than did individuals in the two male classes

    Food Resource Partitioning Among Sympatric Bovids Chinkara, Blackbuck and Nilgai in Rajasthan Desert

    Patterns of dietary selection, overlap and spatial distribution were investigated for three species of sympatric wild ungulates and four species of domestic ungulates (goat, sheep, camel and cattle> during four seasons (summer, pre monsoon, monsoon & post monsoon) in Rajasthan desert. The objective was to determine the mechanisms of food resource partitioning among these seven species of ungulates and the factors allowing their coexistence. Two study areas, Dhawa-Doli and Janwar-Doli were selected for the study, based on the density and distribution of the three wild ungulates. More emphasis was given to Dhawa-Doli where two of the three species (chinkara & blackbuck> were common. Food habits were studied by direct observations. Feeding activity was recorded for feeding height, plant species and part eaten. Availability was determined by percentage cover classes. Three major vegetation zones were identified at Dhawa-Doli. Six study sites were selected across the three vegetation zones. Blackbuck were primarily grazers in monsoon when crops were beginning to grow and annual plants were abundant. Chinkara and nilgai browsed throughout the study and did not show any preference for monocots in periods of resource abundance (monsoon and post monsoon). Food habits of wild ungulates differed more between zones in summer and pre monsoon, when resources were limiting and the effect of vegetation zonation on food habits was evident. In monsoon and post monsoon when resources were abundant, the effect of vegetation zonation was negligible as opportunity for selection increased. Though dietary similarity was more in terms of plant species eaten between chinkara and goats and between sheep and blackbuck, they differed greatly in proportion of utilization. Greater overlap between chinkara and blackbuck during premonsoon suggest a possible temporary interspeciflc competition. In scrublands, dietary overlap was more between species with similar feeding strateg1es (goat & chinkara - sheep & blackbuck) and was less between species with dissimilar feeding strategies. Nilgai was spatially separated in summer and pre monsoon and showed a seasonal spatial overlap w1th chinkara and blackbuck at Dhawa-Doli during crop season. While blackbuck and nilgai exhibited a spatial divergence in response to temporal and spatial availab1lity of food resources, chinkara was largely sedentary. Though utilization of different habitat subun1ts (crop fields, cultivated fields and scrublands) were largely determined by the amount of disturbance, ch1nkara showed a random utilization of these subunits. Blackbuck showed a slight avoidance for crop fields, at least at day time, even though they consumed more crops than chinkara. Mean feeding height for domestic ungulates decreased towards post monsoon as they spent more time feeding on annuals. However, the mean feeding height for wild ungulates increased in response to the growth form of plants. The difference in utilization of different foraging strata was more evident between browsers and more similar between grazers. Broadly, this study suggests that dietary differences among all species were more important than spatial differences, in food resource partitioning.
