Item A geospatial framework to assess ecological connectivity & their persistence for Central India Landscape.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2019) Saini, Swati; Qureshi, QamarThe study explored the occupancy probability for carnivores in 100 sq km grids and at 25 sq.km for herbivore to surrogate, their habitat suitability. These models were further used to model corridors between protected areas using Circuit theory least cost pathway analysis and estimated the changes in land use land cover in and around the identified corridors using the time series and change detection technique. The region of central India comprising five states viz. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand has been taken up as study area. . The research work was carried out with three objectives: 1. Mapping Ecological connectivity between source populations of representative species of central Indian Landscape. 2. Assessment of spatio-temporal land use /land cover changes using time series & predictive change modelling in and around corridor habitats of the central Indian Landscape. 3. To evaluate the macro drivers of change across major linkages and attempt to model their persistence.Item A study on ethno-flora with special reference to Traditional Health Care System (THCS) in western Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2013) Angmo, Kunzes; Adhikari, B.S.A study on ethno-flora with special reference to traditional health care systems (THCS) was conducted in Western Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir (Indian Trans-Himalaya) during 2009-2013. The major objectives of the study were: i) to study and compare the traditional health-care system across major ethnic groups (Boto, Balti and Dards) in Suru, Wakha-chu and Lower Indus valleys, ii) to document the Traditional Knowledge System (TKS) across various ethnic groups, and iii) to assess the conservation status of ethno-medicinal plants in the study area. To meet the objectives of the study a detailed field investigation was undertaken in all the valleys. The field work involved questionnaire survey and group discussions in the three valleys to document traditional healthcare system (THCS), perception of people and allopathic doctors regarding THCS (objective 1); Interviews of local healers and different sections of the society to assess the status of traditional knowledge (objective 2); and Rapid survey of wild medicinal plants across various land forms, habitat and vegetation types so as to ascertain the distribution of ethno-flora across various landforms, and ethnoecology and conservation prioritization of Ethno-flora (objective 3). The study area is located above 2700m altitude and is characterized by unique geographical and socio-cultural attributes. Traditional medicine is one of the tangible heritage of the local people in Ladakh, which has been an indispensable source of both preventive and curative medicine.Item A study on floristic diversity and plant functional types across various landforms in upper Dhauli valley, Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Western Himalaya.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2016) Kumar, Amit; Adhikari, B.S.; Rawat, G.S.In ecological systems, vegetation communities are shaped by various physiographic and edaphic factors which determine their structural and functional attributes. In Trans- Himalayan region of the state of Uttarakhand, limited studies on linkages of floristics, patterns of diversity in various vegetation communities and landforms are available. The region faces disturbances due to various natural and anthropogenic causes. The present research work attempts to assess the diversity of vascular plants, plant community structure and plant functional types (PFTs) in various landforms and physiognomic units in Upper Dhauli Valley, a cold-arid region and buffer of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. This research work has not only generated information on the baseline ecological characteristics of various plant species and communities but also provides valuable management implications. The study is summarized in the following paragraphs. The Upper Dhauli Valley (UDV; ca. 727.7 km2; 30°46-54’N and 79°45-51’E) in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve was selected for intensive study. The UDV was added as a part of buffer zone of NDBR in 2002 and among the least studied valleys of the region with respect to floristics, floral assemblages and vegetation structure. It has three major watersheds namely, Amrit Ganga, Satyagad and Ganesh Ganga. The present study is based on the extensive surveys of various landscape features, landforms and physiognomic units. Reconnaissance survey in the entire valley was conducted in the year 2011. The field work comprised of floristic survey, systematic collection and record of plant specimens, vegetation quantification and collection of soil samples followed by laboratory analysisItem A study on habitat use and food habits of swamp deer (Cervus duvauceli duvauceli) in Jhilmil Tal, Haridwar Forest Division, Uttaranchal(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2009) Tiwari, Rachna; Rawat, G.S.Habitat use and food habits of the swamp deer (Cervus duvauceli duvauceli) were studied in and around Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve (JJCR), Uttarakhand, during June 2006 and June 2008. This population of swamp deer was recently rediscovered in the state and warranted an ecological study and conservation initiative because the habitat around this study area is heavily fragmented due to expansion of agriculture, habitation and various other land use practices. Therefore, this study was initiated. The major objectives were: i. ii. iii. To study seasonal variation in habitat use pattern and food habits, Activity pattern, Population structure and habitat condition, and iv. Identify threats and suggest conservation measures. Habitat evaluation of various potential (but fragmented) habitat blocks in Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve area and surrounding Banganga wetland revealed that they bear a close resemblance with the prime swamp deer habitat both in terms of structure and composition of key habitat variables.Item A study on predation ecology of large carnivores with special reference to human-carnivore conflicts in Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, Central India(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2022) Chatterjee, Anindita B.; Sankar, K.; Qureshi, Qamar; Jhala, Y.V.Seven years of data (2008 – 2015) resulted in phot-capture of 96 unique individual tigers in the study area. The estimated survival rate of individual tigers was high. Survival of female tigers were higher than that of the male tigers but the range was overlapping. Apparent survival and transitional probabilities were best explained by gender specific models. Survival constant was selected as the best model for estimating growth rate of tigers. Calculated annual growth rate was 13% with no observed sex bias.Item A study on the resource dependence, human-wildlife conflict and community participation in forest management in Alaknand basin, Uttarakhand.(wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2018) Manral, Upma; Hussain, S.A.; Badola, RuchiHimalayan mountains are highly dynamic systems with both natural and anthropogenic disturbances acting as integral drivers of natural system dynamics in the region. The consequent changes brought into the system determine ecosystem productivity and the flow of ecosystem services to the humans. Any degradation of ecosystem functions and services will increase both the environmental and socioeconomic vulnerability of mountain communities which are highly reliant on natural systems, particularly forests of the area. The objectives of the study were to: a) quantify the extent of extraction of plant resources in different villages located at different elevations; b) assess the availability of major phyto-resources in and around the villages and surrounding forests along elevational gradient in the Alaknanda river basin; c) assess the extent of human-wildlife conflicts affecting the livelihood in the study area; and d) measure the contribution of community forest management practices in livelihoods of local communities. Four hypothesis were framed as: a) patterns of both availability and the extraction of forest resources in the study area xi change along the elevational gradient; b) human–wildlife conflicts negatively impact livelihood generation of affected communities; c) community forest management practices play a role in augmenting livelihood of local communities in the area; and d) better managed forests in an area are the result of community participation in forest managementItem A study on the structure and composition of forests along an altitudinal gradient in upper Bhagirathi catchment, Garhwal Himalaya.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2001) Uniyal, Sanjay; Rawat, G.S.; Biswas, SasThe present study highlighted the role of anthropogenic factors in distribution of plant communities in addition to altitude, aspect and slope. Market oriented economy has influenced the ethnobotanical knowledge of the local people. Though human-induced pressures are increasing in the area, still the status of forests in Bhagirathi valley is satisfactory compared to neighbouring areas. Hence, proper conservation and scientific management of such rich and diverse forest in small watersheds should be taken up on a priority basis. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Field work (primary source) was carried out during July 1996 to July 1999. Stratified random sampling was done for quantification of various vegetation and site parameters. The study area lies between 780 18' to 780 57' E long and 300 30' to 31 0 08' N lat. It covers an area of ca 2050 sq.km. and has an altitudinal gradient of 279 to 6600 m. For the intensive work two representative watersheds viz., north facing Duggada watershed (DWS) and south facing Bhatwari watershed (BWS) were selected. Objectives of the study include: preparation of baseline vegetation maps of the area, assessment of forest structure and composition, quantification of available woody biomass, documentation of ethnobotanical knowledge of local people and assessing the conservation status of rare plants in the area.Item A study on the traditional knowledge and population status of ethno-medicinal plants in Uttarkashi district, Western Himalaya.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2015) Raut, Ninad B.; Rawat, G.S.This study is design to identify the current status, Population status, Distribution of Ethnomedicinal plants (EMPs) for curative purpose. Uttarkashi one of the largest and culturally diverse district of uttarakhand for this studyItem A study on the vegetation of shivaliks and outer himalaya in Dehradun dun district Uttar Pradesh(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 1996) Bhaisora, N.S.; Rawat, G.S.The subtropical zone or Bhabar tract in north India, characterized by fertile alluvial plains (Doons) and fragile Shivalik hills of Tertiary period, lies between the Upper Gangetic plains and outer Himalaya revealing the floral and faunal affinities with both the regions. Extensive cultivation, dense human population, industrial developments and livestock grazing in this area has caused fragmentation and degradation of forests. Of about 40,000 km2 only < 2000 km2 area has been brought under protected area (PA) coverage e.g., Rajaji and Corbett National Parks. The remaining forests continue to degrade. 2. Sal (Shorea robusta), a commercially "important tree, IS considered as climax species in this tract and has been studied extensively. However, there is a paucity of information on the overall conservation status and regeneration of forests in this area. Therefore present study was, undertaken with the following objectives: i) to study the structure and composition of the woody vegetation (tree and shrub layer) along the gradients of altitude and human use in Shivaliks and outer Himalaya, ii) to study the species diversity and human-animal use patterns in various zones, and iii) to assess and compare the regeneration status of Sal and associated tree species in the Shivaliks and outer Himalaya. 3. The study was conducted within about 500 km2 area in the lower parts of Debra Dun district, Uttar Pradesh (290 57' to 310 20' N lat and 770 35' to 190 20' E long). The study area also included parts of western Rajaji National Park, westerns Shivalik Forest Division, forests in Doon Valley, protected forest patches adjacent to Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Indian Military Academy (IMA) , Forest Research Institute (FRI), Upper parts of Rajpur, Malsi and mine reclamation sites near MussoorieItem A study on vegetation ecology in Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh with reference to gaur (Bos gaurus) using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2007) Areendran, G.; Sankar, K.A study on vegetation ecology with reference to Gaur (Bos gaurus) using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) in Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) Madhya Pradesh was conducted from February 1996 to September 2000. The Tiger Reserve is located between 77° 55' W to 79° 35' E & 21° 08' S to 22° 00' N and lies in the southwestern region of the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Tiger Reserve comprises of the Sanctuary and the National Park of the same name, and buffer zone covering an area of 757.85 sq. km. The PTR offers a unique opportunity for research into the aspects of both the ecology and the management of gaur populations and their habitats. This is due to, both, the diverse pattern of habitat, as a result of rich floral composition and varied topology, and gaur populations that can readily be seen almost throughout the year. In Madhya Pradesh alone, the gaur population is found in 10 districts and they are geographically isolated from one another. The main objectives of the study were: 1)To study vegetation communities, composition, species distribution, abundance and richness in Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh. 2)To map vegetation types and quantify landscape characteristics in PTR, 3)To evaluate the available habitat and predict distribution areas of Gaur in PTR, Madhya Pradesh. model the habitat suitability and predict distribution of Gaur in Pench National Park based on Ecological niche factor analysis (ENFA) using Biomapper software Different variables (Aspect, Cover change, Drainage, Elevation, Food dentity, Ground cover, Slope, Vegetation type, Vegetation index ) were used in the model to predict the suitable habitat and distribution of GaurItem A study on water bird population and human use of Hokersar and Hygam wetlands of Kashmir valley for conservation planning(2009) Hamid, Fozia; Hussain, S.A.The primary focus of this study was to evaluate the landscape composition and describe the floristic communities; assess the waterbird abundance and its spatio-temporal variation. The study also examined the resource dependence of local communities and their conservation attitudes towards these wetlands. The objectives were set forth: Map the habitat types with respect to water depth and vegetation characteristics of Hokersar and Hygam wetlands of Jammu & Kashmir. Derive spatio-temporal variation in the density and diversity pattern of waterbirds in these wetlands. iv Examine the seasonal pattern of use of these two wetlands by migratory and resident waterbirds. Examine the extent of use of these wetlands by the local people and their perception and attitude towards these wetlands. The field work was done during July to October 2004; mid-winter (December - January, 2004-2005); post-winter/ spring (February - April, 2005); summer (July - August, 2005), from June to October, 2006 and from June to October 2007. A structured questionnaire was designed and employed to obtain information on socio-economic parameters and vi dependence on wetland resources. The findings of this study indicate a difference in landscape structure between two wetlands. The pattern of land use - land cover between two landscapes shows that the extent of marshy areas was more in Hokersar wetland landscape (35.65%) than Hygam landscape (22.26%).Item A study people – Protected Area interface at Keibul Lamjao National Park, Manipur.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2014) Leima, Sanggai; Badola, Ruchi; Hussain, S.A.Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) is the only natural home of the remnant population of endangered brow antlered deer or Sangai whose habitat is the phumdi- a unique part of the habitat of KLNP. It is a floating mass of entangled vegetation formed by the accumulation of organic debris and biomass with soil particles. It covers approximately two thirds of the area of the park and the thickness varies from a few centimeters to about two meters. However, due to illegal exploitation of resources from the park in the form of vegetable and fuelwood collection, the park is facing consistent anthropogenic pressures which are posing a threat to the habitat of Sangai. A need arises to understand local people’s dependence on the park as well as their perceptions and attitudes in order to devise management strategies to solve parkpeople conflicts. Thus, the main objectives of the present study were to (a) examine the socioeconomic and demographic conditions of the villagers around KLNP, (b) quantify the resources extracted from the park and its contribution to the livelihoods of the local people, (c) assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the wildlife habitat, (d) examine the conservation awareness and attitudes of people towards the park and alternative livelihood options and (e) to assess the economic value of the park in terms of recreation for the conservation of Sangai and KLNP.Item Abundance, distribution & pattern of human impact on river Dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica).(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2018) Deori, Sunny; Qureshi, QamarThis study took place in a tributary of river Brahmaputra named Kulsi which originates from the Meghalaya enters Assam at Umkiam where it is known as Kulsi and finally discharges at Brahmaputra at Nagarbera, Assam. It is a highly populated riverscape. According to 2011 census data, the riverscape has 55972.88 hectares of cultivable land which is solely dependent for irrigation on natural sources (Rainfall and Rivers). Also, the river is divided into 7 River fishery under Revenue department of Assam. About 2500 commercial fishermen are registered under the fisheries of Kulsi River and 1,29,095 cultivators. Apart from this fine quality sand is a boon to the people of Kulsi floodplain. More than 5000 families were dependent on this business. The recent increase in construction business in Guwahati metropolitan and the nearby blooming towns is raising the earning bar of the people of Kulsi River. My study aimed at the following objectives: 1. Estimating the abundance & patterns of dolphin distribution across Kulsi River. 2. Estimating the effects of different human activities which can possibly affect the habitat and distribution pattern of dolphins in Kulsi River (special preferences to existing commercial fisheries, sand mining, & irrigation). 3. Socio- economic status of fishermen community, sand mining community and farmers and their attitudes towards dolphin and wider ecosystem conservation. 4. Examine suitable measures to minimize/prevent the harmfulness of these fishing gears and practices in the commercial fisheries of Kulsi.Item Agro-Pastoral Practices and their impacts on Wild Mammals in Ladakh, Indian Trans-Himalaya(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2024) Raza, Mohd; Rawat, G.S.; Namgail, T.This study was conducted in Western Ladakh to address the status of current agro-pastoral practices and possible impacts on the wild mammals. Barley and wheat are primary crops whereas alfalfa and oats are cultivated as fodder crops. Sheep, goat and cow are major livestock types. Communities belong to balti and purig ethnicity. Elevation ranges from 2600 – 7000 m. Vegetation comprises wet meadow, steppe, riverine and scrub. Himalayan brown bear, Asiatic ibex, Ladakh urial, musk deer and long tailed marmot are major wild mammals. Major objectives of the study were to study (i) the current status of agro-pastoral practices in the region, ii) vegetation structure and composition in the rangelands intensively used by domestic livestock, iii) habitat use and time budget wild mammals especial long tailed marmots iv) livestock killing by large carnivores in western Ladakh. Field work was conducted during 2017 -2020 in different seasons and valleys. In order to analyse the recent trends in agro-pastoral practices we used questionnaires and informal interviews with the local people ((519 respondents) in all the valley covering Chiktan (56), Suru (227), Drass (117), Shayok (39) and Gya – Meru (39). Data were collected on demography of the pastoral communities, livestock holding pattern, dependency on rangelands and drivers of changes in the region. Likewise, for objective 2) vegetation sampling was carried out in Drass Valley in varying level of livestock grazing intensity from June – August (2018 and 2019). We laid 245 quadrates, comprising 90 in low, 88 in medium and 67 in high grazing areas. We recorded number of species in each quadrat in addition to overall vegetation cover. We also recorded aspect, slope, elevation and landscape type for each quadrat laid in the area. Plants were identified in field using field guides and were authenticated by the supervisors. Habitat use data on marmot were collected from 51 colonies in two valleys whereas data on marmot behaviour was collected from Drass valley. Overall 88 households were interviewed in the valley. Households were randomly selected and data on number of livestock, livestock killed, season, time and place of occurrences were collected. Attitude of respondents with respect to carnivore was also assessed. We observed declining trend in agriculture and livestock production practices in the region. Ten crop types are cultivated in the region. Barley is cultivated in all the valleys whereas oats is a new addition. Crops such as buckwheat, wheat, peas and lentils has been abandoned by many households. Likewise, livestock population and herd size has decreased. Field work was conducted during 2017 -2020 in different seasons and valleys. In order to analyse the recent trends in agro-pastoral practices we used questionnaires and informal interviews with the local people. The local communities perceive that there is a decline in traditional agro-pastoral practices in the study area during past 2-3 decades and an increase in sightings of wild mammals in the study area. Also, they perceive increase in population of Ibex and bear which are widely distributed in the region. We did not have enough sightings on mammal in the summer except for marmots in the region. Sighting on ibex were mostly in winter season. Therefore, impacts of low use of livestock on ibex populations could not be ascertained. We observed difference in vegetation cover and species richness across varying level of livestock intensity. Decrease in vegetation cover and species number, irrespective of all bio physical parameters was observed in high grazing areas. It signifies the impact of livestock grazing with implication on habitat use by mammals.Item An assessment of abundance, habitat use and prey selection by carnivores in Khanchendzonga Biosphere Reserve, Sikkim(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2013) Bashir, Tawqir; Sathyakumar, S.The present study conducted for about five years (2008-2012) was therefore designed to generate some baseline information on the carnivores of the least explored part of the eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot i.e., the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (BR~2,620 km²) with an attempt to assess their diversity, distribution, abundance, space use, food habits, activity patterns and the nature and extent of human-carnivore conflict, if any. An effort was also made to use this information in predicting suitable and priority areas for conservation action and in developing a protocol for long-term population monitoring of these species. Reconnaissance surveys were conducted in seven watersheds of the Khangchendzonga BR and the Prek chu watershed (182 km²) was selected for intensive field work. The study confirmed the presence of 19 species of carnivores from the KBR including 11 species of global conservation significance. In order to understand the factors that govern the co-existence of carnivores in the area their spatial, dietary and temporal patterns of recourse use were also assessed. This study provides the first scientific information on the ecology of carnivores in the Khangchendzonga BR and is of high significance to managers for efficient conservation and management of these ecologically important species and their habitats in such intricate habitats where accessibility and data collection is a limiting factor.Item An assessment of eco-development initiatives in Periyar Tiger Reserve.(Wildlife Institute of India, 2007) Bhardwaj, Anil; Badola, RuchiThe present study was undertaken with the objectives of examining the kind of input provided to local communities (Ecodevelopment committees) through ecodevelopment program. The study was carried out in and around Periyar tiger reserve, KeralaItem An assessment of human-wildlife interactions in the Indus valley, Ladakh, Trans-Himalayas(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2012) Chandola, Shivani; Mathur, V.B.The Hemis National Park, in the “Ladakh mountains” Zone 1A, presents such a case of human-wildlife interaction, where the Snow leopard (Panthera uncia) and the Tibetan wolf (Canis lupus chanko) are known to be the major cause of livestock losses to the agro-pastoral communities of this region. On the other hand, the livestock grazing and tourist influx have been cited as challenge for habitat and wildlife conservation. The present study was designed to improve upon the existing knowledge on the human-wildlife interactions in Ladakh. The major objectives of the study were to (i) study the pattern of resource use and its contribution to livelihood of local communities in Trans-Himalayan landscape; (ii) evaluate xi the pattern of conflicts arising from resource use practices by the local communities and its impact on wildlife values; (iii) examine the existing education systems and religio-cultural teachings in their ability to address the conservation issues of the region, and (iv) to examine the existing policy instruments and suggest improvement to minimize such conflicts. The assessment of natural resource dependency and sources of livelihood for the local community residing inside the HNP was carried out during 2005-2006 using data generated through questionnaire surveys, personal observations and secondary sources.Item An assessment of livelihood dependency and anthropogenic pressures on tiger habitat in Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu, India.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2016) Gupta, Santanu; Mishra, B.K.Kalakad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) (8º 20’- 8º 53’ N and 77º10’- 77 º 35’ E) located at the southern end of Western Ghats is famous worldwide for it’s endemic plant diversity, and the reserve is home of endangered animals like lion-tailed macaque (Macaca Silenus), Nilgiri tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius), Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), and tiger (Panthera tigris). KMTR experienced high anthropogenic pressure in past from 145 villages situated outside eastern boundary of reserve as well as from enclave settlements. A number of activities aimed at conservation awareness among various stakeholders, off farm alternate employment generation opportunities for forest dependent families, promoting use of alternate fuels and energy saving devices, and biomass regeneration initiatives were taken up under this project. The impact of ecodevelopment in reducing PA resource dependency and consequent reduction of anthropogenic pressure on park was thoroughly analyzed by integrating ecological and socio-economic assessment. This overall assessment of dependency and pressure on KMTR during ecodevelopment could serve as a feedback mechanism to promote better integration of conservation and development in future. Objectives 1. To quantify the change in dependency of local communities upon PA resources. 2. To assess the change in anthropogenic pressures on the PA resources. 3. To examine the drivers of change with respect to dependency and pressures.Item An ecological assessment of forest spatial heterogeneity species diversity and grassland burning practices in the terai conservation area.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2002) Kumar, Harish; Mathur, P.K.The present study formed a part of the major collaborative project entitled "Management of Forests for Biological Diversity and Forest Productivity - A New Perspective", jointly implemented by the Wildlife Institute of India and the US Forest Service. The project aimed to address the primary requirement of forests of sustaining biodiversity. It is being realized that the traditional forest management approach had to undergo a major shift in emphasis and strategies. The project expected to demonstrate the integration of science and management in a planning process that establishes the complimentary roles of wildlife protected areas and the large surrounding landscape of managed forests in maintaining forest based biological diversity. The project was field based at four Conservation Areas (CAs) that covered large landscapes of forested and non-forested matrix areas representing a variety of biogeographic patterns, forestry practices, ethnic human societies and their forest based culture, economies and tradition, and the range of administrative realities. Each of the CAs included select protected areas (PAs) - National Parks or Wildlife Sanctuaries; Managed Forests (MFs) and the intervening matrix of the Government, community or private lands so as to constitute a larger delineated landscape. The present study specifically focussed on the Terai Conservation Area (TCA), one of the four CAs. The TCA covering 7,896.6 sq km constitutes a spatial heterogeneous landscape of Pas including Dudwa Natioal Park (DNP) and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS); and Managed Forests (MFs) of North Kheri and South Kheri Forest Divisions (NKFD and SKFD) within a matrix of private agricultural lands. the present study focused on the landscape spatial patterns, their influence on species diversity and also the effect of various grassland burning practices in TCA. In order to achieve this, the following objectives were set forth for the present study: a.To assess, characterize and map the current land use and landscape patterns. b.To identify, classify and describe vegetation communities, assess their extent and geographic distribution in the landscape. c.To assess the influence of landscape spatial patterns on habitat and species of particular management interest. d.To assess grassland burning practices vis-a-vis plant diversity, productivity, ungulate use and make appropriate recommendations for the management..Item An ecological study of sympatric hornbills and fruiting patterns in a tropical forest of Arunachal Pradesh.(Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2001) Datta, Aparajita; Rawat, G.S.The tropical forests in north-east India have a diverse assemblage of hornbills (Bucerotidae), ranging from the cooperatively breeding Brown hornbills (Anorrhinus spp.) to the monogamous and territorial Great hornbill (Buceros b{cornis). Focussing on three sympatric species, the Great hom bill (Buceros bicornis), the Wreathed hornbill (Aceros undulatus), and the Oriental Pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris), in a lowland semievergreen forest of Arunachal Pradesh this study attempted. the dispersal syndromes of tree species were evaluated, and their patterns of flowering and fruiting examined. The study was conducted in the lowland semievergreen forests of Pakhui National Park, western Arunachal Pradesh.
