Status and trend of Great Indian Bustard associated wildlife, habitat and threats in Thar.
    (Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2026) Dutta, S.; Kher, V.; Jangid, A.K.; Uddin, M.; Supakar, S.; Gupta, S.; Lawrence, S.; Paul, I.; Pati, A.; Gurjar, M.; Dagur, T.; Sen, S.; Gowda, Y.; Sindha, P.; Moitra, M.; Kapadi, P.; Dobhal, P.; Bhardwaj, G.S.
This report presents findings from past and recent surveys to provide an updated account of population status, spatial distribution and habitat conditions of the GIB and associated fauna across the Thar landscape. It also evaluates the growing human footprint that fragments habitats and escalate species displacement and mortality risks. These findings aim to inform conservation management under the National Bustard Recovery Program, supporting population recovery through conservation breeding, adaptive habitat management, grassland restoration and threat mitigation.

    Bustard Recovery Program: Progress Report
    (Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2022) Dutta, S.; Karkaria, T.; Bipin, C.M.; Uddin, M.; Kher, V.; Sharma, H.; Joshi, H.; Varma, V.; Paul, I.; Gupta, T.; Pandey, D.; Supakar, S.; Nagar, A.; Rathore, S.S.; Yellapu, S; Sakhlani, P.; Kolipakam, Vishnupriya; Qureshi, Q.; Jhala, Y.V.
The project is implementing conservation breeding of GIB and LF for future rewilding. Sites in Ramdevra and Sorsan were selected for long-term conservation breeding facilities for GIB and LF. Since the construction and operation of new facilities would require a few years, a temporary facility was established in Sam, Jaisalmer, in June 2019 that currently houses 16 artificially incubated hand-reared GIB, and another temporary facility was established in Bijainagar, Ajmer that currently houses two artificially incubated hand-reared LF, from wild-collected eggs.

Bustard Recovery Program: Annual Progress Report 2023-24
    (Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, 2024) Dutta, S.; Karkaria, T.; Bipin, C.M.; Uddin, M.; Kher, V.; Sharma, H.; Joshi, H.; Bishnoi, V.; Sonika, C.K.; Paul, I.; Gupta, T.; Supakar, S.; Nagar, A.; Pati, A.; Gupta, S.; Purohit, N.; Lawrence, S.; Jangid, A.K.; Gujjar, M.; Moitra, M.; Bhattacharya, S.; Sawant, M.; Krishna, M.; Sakhlani, P.; Kawlni, L.; Kolipakam, Vishnupriya; Qureshi, Q.
Within the project scope, significant efforts have been made in Rajasthan since 2019 to breed and conserve both species. This has resulted in the establishment of ex-situ populations, including 29 captive GIB and 10 captive LF. Additionally, measures to protect these species in their natural habitats have been undertaken, such as managing nest predators, addressing threats, and sensitising key stakeholders and decision-makers in conservation efforts.
